Our Home
In January 2008, after more than three decades without a dedicated space, Congregation Darchei Noam found its permanent home at 864 Sheppard Avenue West. This fully accessible facility encompasses diverse multipurpose spaces, seamlessly blending aesthetic appeal with practicality. Crafted with eco-friendly technologies and materials, the building harmonizes tradition and modernity, creating a distinct and inviting space for the community.
Design
Architected by Quadrangle Architects, a firm including one of our congregants, the design process involved extensive consultations with community members. Aligned with our Reconstructionist principles, the building embodies values such as Bal Tashchit (do not waste) and Tikkun Olam (heal the world). This modern yet traditionally inspired structure incorporates sustainable materials, and cutting-edge energy conservation, audio-visual, and security technology inside, complemented by the timeless look of Jerusalem stone from Israel on the exterior.
The upper level features an airy sanctuary illuminated by natural light from windows and skylights. It also houses the synagogue office, the rabbis’ studies, and a toddler-friendly babysitting room with washroom facilities. Ritual art, including a colorful Aron Kodesh and a blown-glass ner tamid, enhances the spiritual atmosphere.
The middle level hosts the elegant social hall, suitable for events from community Kiddush to special lectures and Israeli dancing. With a stage and Aron Kodesh, this space accommodates diverse activities throughout the year, supported by a full kitchen.
The lower level encompasses a multi-purpose room, a teen lounge, the Yavne Library, and a full kitchen. The entrance showcases a unique illuminated Dedication Wall and egalitarian Donor Wall, honouring all those who contributed to the construction.
Environmentally-friendly features include solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, high-efficiency heating and cooling units, a reflective “white roof” for reduced heat gain, low VOC materials, motion-detection sinks, and more.
