Preparing for the High Holy Days: Spiritual Reflections and Personal Growth (In person or via Zoom) Tuesdays, September 10, 17, and 24 - 07:30 p.m. 864 Sheppard Ave W The month of Elul is a sacred time for introspection, spiritual growth, and preparation for the High Holy Days. This three-session course, led by diverse and knowledgeable teachers, offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding and experience of this significant period in the Jewish calendar. Each session will focus on different aspects of spiritual preparation, providing participants with practical insights, reflective practices, and communal learning. The sessions are on three consecutive Tuesday evenings. Tickets will provide you with admission either in person or via a Zoom link. Register Here Please register for each evening separately. Join us for our meaningful Selichot program at Congregation Darchei Noam, a cherished tradition that prepares us spiritually for the High Holy Days. Our Selichot service will take place on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, offering an opportunity for reflection, repentance, and renewal. The evening will begin with Havdallah, and then join together in prayer, poetry and song. We invite you to join us for this sacred occasion, as we seek forgiveness, strengthen our commitments, and embrace the possibilities of the year ahead. We will come together at Darchei Noam Community Memorial service in honour of the kidnapped and murdered last year on October 7, 2023. Following the service we will join in an online presentation by the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. Professor Rachel Korazim will speak about "A Year in Poetry: Marking the Anniversary of October 7." Mark Sandler is widely known as one of Canada’s leading criminal lawyers and pro bono advocates. He’ll be speaking about the difference between protected speech and hate speech. Mark is the founder and Chair of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism (ALCCA), a diverse coalition of 40+ community organizations and groups that collaboratively address antisemitism through advocacy, education and respectful dialogue. He has lectured extensively on legal remedies to combat hate and has promoted respectful Muslim-Jewish, Sikh-Jewish and Black-Jewish dialogues. He has appeared before parliamentary committees and the Supreme Court of Canada on multiple occasions on antisemitism and hate activities. He is also a former member of the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. Register
On the Hebrew anniversary of October 7th, we will hold a special commemorative service. Please join us in the sanctuary for an expanded memorial Ma’ariv prayer, followed by a concert of Israeli music. A note from our Executive Director: "As an Israeli and a musician, I invite you all to a special concert commemorating the Hebrew calendar day that marks the horror events of October 7th. This will be a unique exploration of Israeli music, with seven songs representing each decade of the state of Israel—songs of grief and longing, but also hope and a wish for a better future." Join us Thursday morning for Shemini Atzeret with a special expanded Yizkor service. In the evening, we shall reconvene for our Simchat Torah festivities, which include a light dinner, live music, dancing, and merry-making.
